2 Nights/3 Days - Rubondo National Park

About The Park

Rubondo Island National Park lies in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, some 200 kms west of Serengeti. The park is quite small with a size of about 457sqkm, surrounded by lake on all sides making the park look like a floating zoo. The park can be used as a lovely retreat for visitors and offers the combination of a near perfect climate, atmospheric jungle-fringed beaches, some unusual wildlife viewing and the opportunity of exploring it all on foot or by boat. Besides the main island of 240sqkm the park comprises of 11 other small islets, none of which are larger than 2sqkm.

Wildlife numbers and variety at Rubondo are less compared to other national parks in the country. What makes Rubondo different however is the unusual viewing opportunities it gives. Most of the game viewing is done on foot or on boat, this brings one quite close to the animals. Prominent species include: Chimpanzees, Colobus Monkeys, Elephant, Giraffe, crocodile and Sitatunga. Rubondo is the only national park in the country where the Sitatunga is not as shy as elsewhere and can be viewed with relative ease.

Rubondo will be very pleasing to bird watchers. With over 225 species recorded up to now and the count is still continuing, the park is a haven for birds of aquatic and forest habitats.

Day 1: Flight out of Arusha departing for Rubondo. On arrival transfer to Rubondo Island Camp. Meals and overnight at camp.

Day 2: After breakfast, boat safari to Bird Islands. Spend 2-3 hours here viewing the spectacular birdlife. Some prominent species include: Fish Eagle, Goliath, Purple and Squacco Heron, long-toed Plover, blue-headed Coucal, open-billed and yellow-billed Storks, swamp Flycatcher and various weavers. After lunch spend the rest of the afternoon game viewing on a walking safari with a professional guide. Prominent species include: Chimpanzees, Colobus Monkeys, Elephant, Giraffe, crocodile. Meals and overnight at camp.

4 Nights/5 Days - Katavi

About the park

Katavi is probably the wildest and most untouched reserve in the whole of Africa. It is the only remaining park in Africa that would best fit the description of Africa as it would have been 200 years ago, as described in the biographies of ancient white hunters and missionaries. It is the only remaining park in Africa where you are sure to have a million acres just to yourself. It just cannot get wilder!

Occupying an area of about 4,500sqkms- the 3rd largest in Tanzania, Katavi national park lies within the Rukwa rift, a shallow easterly extension of the main western rift valley that culminates in the extensive Lake Rukwa basin to the east of the national park. Katavi
is characterized by the dense cover of brachystegia woodland, which are transected by the Katuma and Kapapa rivers. Here one can enjoy the spectacular game viewing of wildlife.

There is hardly anyone who comes out of Katavi not happy with the experience. For us this is the No. 1 destination in Africa.

Optional: With an extra charge, Fly Camping is recommended and possible in Katavi. However you will need to spend more nights in Katavi

The park provides a good opportunity of viewing the rare species of cheetah and wild dogs. Other predators include leopards and hyenas. 4 Nights/5 Days

Mahale

Overview

Mahale is probably the loveliest national park in Tanzania. On one side are the high mountains with thick forest and on the other side you have the beautiful crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. And in the middle there are the deserted beautiful white sandy beaches. Simply paradise. Besides tracking chimpanzees and other primates in the park, one can also do some other worthwhile activities such as swimming, snorkeling, fishing, walking on the lakeshore, boating and visiting the nearby fishing villages.

Mahale is relatively bigger, wilder and houses more chimpanzees than Gombe. Statistics indicate that there are more than 700 wild chimpanzees in different communities at Mahale. There is only one habituated group open for tourism and that is the Mimikere group. In size mahale is about 30 times bigger than Gombe occupying about 1,613sqkm.

Topographically the park is dominated by the Mahale range, which is a part of the rift valley escarpment that rises sharply from the lakeshore up to the highest peak in the range. There are 4 main vegetation zones characterizing Mahale; these are Miombo woodland, rainforest, savannah and montane grassland.

Day 1: Flight out of Arusha departing for Mahale. On arrival transfer to one of the luxury tented camps. Lunch at camp; spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Dinner and bonfire at the camp.

Day 2: Breakfast at the camp, and then proceed for early morning game viewing (chimpanzee tracking in the forest). As you walk in the thick forest while tracking the chimpanzees you pass through beautiful scenery and hear thrilling sounds of birds, insects and other inhabitants of the forest. Lunch at the camp. Spend the rest of the afternoon game viewing by boat on the Lake. Lake Tanganyika is very clean and clear so you can enjoy the beautiful sightseeing. Here you will see a variety of birds, hippos etc. Dinner and bonfire at camp.

Day 3: After breakfast another early morning game viewing (Chimpanzee tracking in the forest). Lunch at camp. Spend the rest of the afternoon fishing by boat on the lake for 2-3 hrs. Mahale is one of the best locations on Lake Tanganyika for fishing; hence you will be able to catch a lot of fish in only a few hours. Some of the types of species caught are the sangara (Nile Perch) and kuhe (Yellow Belly). Dinner/Overnight at camp.

Day 4: After breakfast short game viewing. Afternoon at leisure. In the evening connect flight to Kigoma. Spend the evening sightseeing in Kigoma town. Dinner and overnight at Kigoma Hiltop.
